GESTALT THERAPY

Gestalt therapy is named after the German word Gestalt, which roughly translates to "whole" "form," "pattern," or "configuration". It is called Gestalt because the therapy focuses on treating the individual as a complete entity—mind, body, and emotions—rather than focusing on specific symptoms or broken-down parts.

Why Gestalt?

Gestalt therapy is a way of working that focuses on your present-moment experience, what you are thinking, feeling, and sensing as your life unfolds.

Rather than just looking for explanations in the past, Gestalt therapy pays attention to how your difficulties are showing up right now. The past is relevant but only in how it impact the way you live life right now. These might be in your thoughts, your emotions, your body, or the way you relate to other people.

The core idea is: when you become more aware of how you experience the world, you have more choice in how you respond to it.

Why Focus on the Present?

It’s often tempting to try to “figure ourselves out” by analysing why we are the way we are. While understanding the past can be valuable, insight on its own doesn’t always lead to change.

Gestalt therapy focuses on what is happening in the moment because this is where patterns are the most alive.

For example, you might notice:

  • a tendency to hold things in rather than speak

  • a feeling of anxiety that shows up in certain situations

  • a habit of putting others’ needs before your own

  • a need to relentlessly overthink situations to manage uncertainty

By becoming more aware of these patterns as they happen, it becomes easier to understand them—and, over time, to shift them.

A More Active, Collaborative Approach

Gestalt therapy is less about sitting back while someone analyses you, and it’s not about being given advice or instructions.

It’s a collaborative process. I will be engaged, attentive, and sometimes gently challenging, while also respecting your pace and boundaries.

The aim is to create a space where you can explore openly, experiment with new ways of being, and begin to understand yourself in a deeper and more immediate way.

What Happens in a Gestalt Therapy Session?

Sessions will feel like deeper conversations, but often with a slightly different focus. Alongside talking about your experiences, we may slow things down and explore what you are noticing in the moment. This could include:

  • your emotional responses

  • physical sensations

  • changes in your thoughts as you speak

  • how you experience the interaction between us

  • what you are noticing about yourself

At times, I may invite you to try simple, optional exercises to explore something more fully. These are about helping you connect more directly with yourself and how you experience the world.

Is Gestalt Therapy Right for Me?

Gestalt therapy may suit you if you are interested in understanding yourself more deeply, not just in theory, but through your lived experience. You don’t need to be “good at talking about feelings” or have a clear idea of what you want to say. Curiosity is enough.

If you’re unsure, it can be helpful to start with an initial conversation to see how the approach feels for you.
